Just do it! I did it and am loving it :)

I quit my job a little over a year ago. I absolutely loved working for By The Hand, an inner-city after-school program helping nearly 1000 kids in Chicago. I LOVED IT and what they were doing, but knew I couldn't give my full self to both work and to my son that was growing in my ever-evolving belly. I felt God drawing me out of that job, but hated that I didn't know what was next. I am a person who likes to know what is going to happen not only tomorrow, but in 5 years, so the unknown was scary to me.

I remember 6 months ago, when my mother-in-law (who is awesome by the way), was over. I cried to her not knowing what in the world I was going to do, knowing that we needed a double income, at least for now. Then I cried out to God and asked Him what He wanted next from me and that I was ready to be obedient. It is amazing when you come to Him, rather than trying to figure it out on your own, He totally shows up. As my old boss would say, He is always on time, rarely early. That was the case for me.

So then I started remembering all the people who told me that I should start selling the pieces that I was making around our house because they would fly out the door. The fact that I might fail at it held my feet in place though. But then, I realized if I wanted to stay at home with my son, this might work. So the next week, as an experiment, I posted a few items around our house that I had done on Craigslist. They sold within an hour!!! So that is the fire that I needed ignited under my rear to launch MegMade.

Now, five months later, we have sold more than 30 pieces and are LOVING it. We now even have a mailing list with our items and have a waiting list for some!! Can you believe it?!?! God truly is blessing our hands and we are in awe.

Thank you so much for following us on our journey. We are so excited to share LOADS more before and afters, tutorials, our new house reno and little tid bits about us!

Let me know what you want to see more of and if you are considering starting to redo furniture, JUST DO IT :)

Leibster Award

So excited! I have sweetly been nominated for the Liebster Award by Jackie Jade. Never knew about it until she nominated me for it, but it is fun and I hope you participate! There is no real award for this except that it is fun and you will learn more about me :)

The Liebster Award is for up and coming blogs with less than 200 followers.

Here are the rules -
1. You must post 11 random facts about yourself.
2. Answer the questions by your nominator.
3. Nominate 11 bloggers (with less than 200 followers) and link them in your post.
4. Create 11 questions for your nominees.
5. No tag back required - but leave a comment on this post with the URL to your Liebster post so I can learn more about you!

Questions for my nominees -
1. When was the first time you were on a plane? hmm, probably pretty young, under 1
2. Did you have braces? Yes, yikes, prefer to forget those years!
3. Do you have a lucky number? I like the number 5, it's the number of grace and I like grace.
4. What was your favorite subject in high school? I think probably history because I grew up in London and London has a lot of the world's history in their museums so it was fun.
5. Where is one place you really want to travel? I want to go to Machu Pichu really bad and Bora Bora. Those pictures are so enticing of the cabanas on the water...right, who wouldn't want to go there!
6. Are you a fan of scary movies? NO! I like action movies, but not scary movies!
7. Do you have any pets now? I have a toy poodle who is more of a son than a dog :) Yes we are those people.
8. What's your favorite tv show? I really like Homeland
9. Why did you start your blog? I started it to keep track of our life, but it turned into a furniture blog
10. How many siblings do you have? 2
11. Do you enjoy cooking? most of the time

I'll nominate people later :) I'm such a cheater!!!

Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say!

Fan of the year award

We know that we couldn't have been successful with our furniture business or our blog without the help and support of amazing friends, family, buyers and bloggers. There is one person who stands out among all the rest for her INCREDIBLE encouragement and advertising of our pieces. The award goes to none other than Brenda Marin! Thanks to you and your awesome hubby for being so ahhhhmazing!

Happy New Year!

Joe and I both agree that 2013 is going to be a great year for the Piercy family. We are amazed by the way God blessed us in 2012 and can hardly wait to see Him show up in 2013! Here's our goals that we have come up with so far!

1. MOVING - Joe and I are buying our first home. We have been renting ever since we got married and are hoping to close on our place late January or early February, If everything goes as planned. The funny thing is, Joe and I were praying that we would find a place in our neighborhood because we love our neighbors and neighborhood. Not only did He help us get a place in our neighborhood, but we are buying a place across the hall. It is 2 floors, where our current one is one floor. We are going from a 2 bed one bath to a 4 bed, 3 bath. There will be LOTS of projects that come along with the new place and will share them with you as they move along. Here is a sneak peek at the new place (sorry for the bad quality). It is in good shape, but needs a lot of love.

2. GROW MEG MADE DESIGNS: Just last year at this time I quit my job working for By The Hand not knowing exactly what I was going to do next, but knowing that I wanted to stay at home and raise my son. What is amazing is that we started selling a few pieces we had re-done and it turned into a business. We now are selling two to five pieces a week and have people requesting things and a waiting list!!! God is so good. Our goal is to grow the business now that we will have more room to work in our new place.

In addition to selling more pieces, we would like to grow our blog. My goal is to grow it from 51 followers to 500 followers this year. I don't know that this one will happen, but we can hope! I love sharing the work we do as well as others and hope you do too!

3. HEALTH: This encompasses a lot of things for us. We really want to be healthier physically and are going to begin working out again, but we want to be healthier spiritually too and are going to go to great lengths to grow in our spiritual walk.

4. ORGANIZATION: If you know my family you know they are super organized. And if you know me and Joe, you know we are not. This whole having a child thing has not helped it at all either!! We aim to be more organized in our home and in our filing this year. I know I am capable and can do it. It will make me happy too if I am able to stay organized!

5. TRAVEL: I have never been on a mission trip and would love to go. We are planning to go on a big mission trip this year!

and obviously, Wells is included in each of these things as our marriage and our son are the most important things to focus on all year and come first!

We are excited to grow up one more year with you! Happy New Year!

Obsessed with The Voice

I am not someone who gets super into a show. In fact, Joe and I didn't even have cable until a few months ago. However, I am a little embarrassed to admit that I CANNOT wait until Monday and Tuesday nights so that I can watch The Voice.

See, I think I have a great voice. I love to sing at the top of my lungs in the car and at home when I am cleaning. I like to belt songs at church, you know the ones that everyone gets in to. I like to sing in the shower and I like to sing to Wells. I think I have a great voice, did I mention that. The problem is no one else seems to think so. I would be the one who goes on the X Factor and they would play re-runs and have a YouTube sensation on how bad I really was. I get an A+ for desire for a good voice and a nearly failing grade for performance.

I don't think it is fair because my mom's talent when she was Miss Kansas was singing (sorry mom, just let the cat out of the bag!) Why in the world did I not inherit that talent. I got your good looks but now your voice, just kidding. I am my dad through and through :)

So, because I cannot pursue a career with my voice, I will continue at what I seem to be decent at, doing creative things around the house.

However, I will leave you with a few reasons I think the show is genius:

1. The judges are so funny in their interactions.

2. Four legit talents that are judges.

3. It's refreshing that it is about the voice and not their look.

4. No age limits, so there are a variety of experiences and talent.

5. The judges are encouraging to the singers even when they don't turn their chairs.

So plug in to the show and let me know who is your favorite. I like Blake's team member Gracia, who yodels, so cool!

Wells is 5 months...well he is in 3.5 days!!!

So, I know that most of my followers now are not people who know me, which by the way, makes me soooo happy. I feel so blessed to now have 31 followers. I know that is a small number still, but it makes me so happy when I see that number go up, so thanks for following.

I also write this blog though to keep track of our lives, so although my Wells Photo Wednesdays may not be your #1 fave, I love them and it will help me keep track of my little man who is growing so fast. So bear with me, it's only 1 day a week :) And...I have a fabulous new dining set to show you tomorrow, so stay tuned!

So back to Wells. He is not actually 5 months until the 23rd, but I thought I would go early instead of late this time. Woot Woot! Plus...what the heck, he laughs and laughs and laughs and giggles and talks all the time, but EVERY TIME I pull out the camera it is a serious look or the tongue out. I promise, he's a happy baby :)

Weight: 17 lbs.
Height: 26 in.

Milestone:  He just continue to amaze me with how much he learns everyday. This month he is about to cut his first tooth, He sit up unassisted (sometimes crashes into his face though), belly laughs, grabs everything in sight, torments the dog, and can follow sounds and people moving.

Favorite things: He loves mirrors, his rainforest exersaucer, the front pack, blankets, his toys, the boppy, Sesame Street, and his daddy (especially his elephant noises!)

My thoughts: Wells has made my life fuller. I had a great life growing up, on my own, married and now with little guy my life is just fuller. Watching him learn about the world and having a part in shaping it is the most amazing gift I have ever been given. Joe and I marvel at the God who creates life, He is worthy to be praised. Mr. Wells, thank you for being so joyful, fun and loving us so much. Your joy and laughter are contagious (as we found out at Walgreens the other day when you had the whole store cracking up). I can't wait to watch you learn more next month.

P.S. My getting 350 items out by tomorrow is going fabulous. I am at 300 now! Look at my drawer. The one the left doesn't even have anything in it! Yea :)

Wells Photo Wednesday + Clean House

This is an old photo but has to be featured, because is makes me smile every time I see it. What a babe!

Why this crazy cleaning frenzy. Here's some history.

I grew up in a insanely clean house. Not like a bad, you can't touch anything or you get in trouble type of place, but a place that was always clean. My entire family-minus me- is very organized, borderline OCD. Some not so borderline :) To explain how I differ from my family, take the following story. My mom used to tell me that anything left on my floor at night would be donated to kids who needed it. So, I just put it in my bed and slept with it. My sister was nice an neat and my brother and dad too, but not me. Easier to throw it in bed than put it away. Creative - yes. Bad habit started at a young age - yes, yes.

Sadly, that trait has carried on to adulthood. My countertops and floor are clean, but the drawers and everything unseen ...well, not so much. Clean on the outside, on the inside dirty! Then I got to thinking. Jesus wants us to be clean on the inside. He looks at the heart, not at the outside. So I am taking what I, as a person, should be like and am going to translate that to my living space. Look at the outside of this dresser and then look at the inside. Point made right here! Really?!?!?! Dog treats, a lighter, tape, cards and on and on and on things that don't go together in a drawer!

Advantages and disadvantages regarding this project:

1. I have the training on how to be organized. My whole upbringing trained me for this day.
2. I don't get attached to stuff so it won't be too difficult letting stuff go.
3. I have thousands of items, so what is 300 in the grand scheme of things.
4. The hubby is on board.
5. I know where to get fun stuff to replace the old...oops, not the point of de-cluttering.
6. I can make money by selling some of it
7. The other things I can give to people who I know need it and that makes me happy.

1. Time consuming

So the advantages of this project far outweigh the disadvantages so here we go. Here's to getting rid of 300 items before I leave next Thursday for Kansas City. I'll take pics along the way and show you what I got rid of.  Wish me luck!

Piercy Family Reunion!

I have been married into the Piercy family for almost 3 years now and we haven't all been together since our wedding! It was so much fun to have everyone back! There were 12 great grandchildren there! We had people come in from Pennsylvania, Florida, Kansas City and all over Illinois! Here are a few pix from the wonderful weekend. Thank you Jani and Jim for hosting an amazing event!
