Turning a basket into a light fixture tutorial

The real name should be "turning a basket that was found by the side of the road into a light fixture." I love me some free sidewalk trash. Remember our guest bed head board window frame that we found in a back alley. Is that weird that we put sidewalk trash in our house...hmm, I'm over it!

So, Jani, Joe's mom, has now been trained to keep an eye out for trash treasure and she scored. She is the one who found our card catalog on Craigslist, and has scored again by finding this basket on the side of the road. At first, I thought it may be too big, but truth is, IT"S PERFECT! See how we did it here with our light fixture kit from Ikea!

Here she is in all her glory before the transformation began.

Step 1 - Drill a hold big enough for the plug end side of the cord to fit through. You can always make the hold bigger, not smaller, so remember that :)

Step 2: Fit the cord through the hole.

Wells woke up during the process, so here is me holding little man while daddy does the work :)

Step 3: Our basket was coming apart a bit so we used wire to hold the top on.

Step 4: Find a stud in the ceiling and screw it in. We did it with cable cord holders like these. See, we totally would have fixed it into the ceiling and not had a cord going across the ceiling but we rent and don't own, so this is our makeshift way of having a light fixture. Not so bad, eh?

So our stud finder didn't work at first and we missed a few times, oops!

Next, plug in a light bulb and gasp at the beauty :)

Here it is with the light off.

Here is our dining room before:

Do you like the change or should we have kept it the same?

Also, we took the old shade and put it on another lamp we just made, more on that later :)

  5. The rectangular table makes the space. And I love your idea of using the basket. Does it cast fun shadows on the walls at night?

    1. Not only does the basket make fun shadows but the hammered silver bowl makes the coolest ones when the light hits it!
